HARMONY DAY – “EVERYONE BELONGS”

The sound of culture broke through the air as we arrived at Kidstown on Monday, March 20th, for the Greater Shepparton Cultural Week festivities. What does ‘culture’ sound like, you ask? It sounds like children from all different walks-of-life, laughing and playing with their friends. It sounds like music from different countries playing as we take our seats. It sounds like parents, chattering in their mother-tongue, who have come to watch their children perform today. It sounds wonderful.

Throughout this event, many people from different schools performed for the crowd. We watched Indigenous Dancers from the Dungala Dance Group perform, as well as Islander students who sang for us.

The Shepparton English Language Centre students sang our National Anthem, and even knew the second verse! But the best performance of them all came from Sirius College’s primary students who performed a Punjabi dance for everybody! The crowd was so excitable, and were seen clapping and bopping in their seats to the beat of the music.

After the performances, the students were able to enjoy some activities around the park, including a train ride, matching origami cranes to the correct languages and flags, making badges, and some art and craft activities.

On Tuesday we had a sea of colour, when all students and staff were encouraged to come to school dressed in either orange or their traditional costumes. The variety was beautiful and students learnt about the importance of getting along with each other and allowing everyone to participate, regardless of race, culture, gender or religion. This year’s theme was “Everyone Belongs” and it was a very important message to get across. Thank you to our students for being so accepting of each other, and for participating in such an important event.
